Quick start guide: Preparing your Content

This quick start guide will take you through how to create your first lesson to teach in edify! For the purposes of this tutorial, we will be creating a lesson about plants, but feel free to follow along using your own lesson topic.

To continue with this guide, you will need to have installed the edify launcher and lesson creator. If you have not done this yet, you can refer to our Quick Start to Installing Edify guide.

Creating a new lesson

As your first step, please open the edify launcher. To create a new lesson, there are two paths you can use. Firstly, you can click on Create new lesson in the My lessons tab. Alternatively, you can click on Lesson Creator in the Edify lessons tab and then click on Create new lesson when the lesson creator opens.

You will then have the option to name your lesson and give it a short description. You can use these to differentiate between your different lessons. Click on Create lesson when you are done.

Opening an existing lesson

If you have previously created a lesson or someone has sent you a lesson, you also have two ways to open them. The first method is by selecting the My lessons tab of the edify launcher and clicking on your lesson. You can also open the Lesson creator from the Edify lessons tab and then click on Existing lessons. You will then see the lessons saved on your machine and can click open on your chosen lesson.

Adding objects to your lesson

Once you have opened your lesson, you will be taken to the objects screen where you can specify which objects you would like to be inside your lesson. Examples of the kind of objects you can import would be 3D models to interact with or PDF files to use for slides. For a full description of everything you can create, please go to our 2D objects and 3D objects guides.

For this lesson, we are going to download some new models from Sketchfab. First we click on Add Sketchfab model and log in using our Sketchfab details. We are then presented with a list of models, most of which are freely available from Sketchfab. We use the search bar to filter the models we can see, click on Add, and then Download. Once the model has downloaded, we able to use in the lesson.

Once you are happy with the models for your lesson, click on Launch to enter the lesson. You can always return to the objects screen if you would like to add more objects.

Adding videos to your lesson

We will also use a video from our computer to add some movement to the lesson. We do this by clicking on Add file, navigating to the folder where the video has been saved, and open the file.

Adding a website

The final thing we are going to do for this lesson is to add a website. For our lesson, we have a youtube video we’d like to show. To do this, we press the “Add website” button, and provide a name for the website, and a URL. When you press “Add”, the website will be shown alongside your other content.

And that’s us done! There are other forms of content you can add, such as notes and annotations, but these are covered in our feature articles. Edify will also continue to expand into other types of content, such as quizzes for your students. Once you are happy with the models for your lesson, click on Launch to enter the lesson. You can always return to the objects screen if you would like to add more objects.
